Where Is Upstate New York?
Upstate NY doesn’t have one fixed line on a map. So, what is considered Upstate New York often depends on who you ask. Most people agree it’s everything north and west of the New York City metro area, and only New York City and Long Island sit “downstate.” The state’s Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) uses that same broad view, treating all counties outside Westchester, Rockland, and Dutchess as upstate.

History & Early Settlement
Before the European settlement in Upstate NY, the local Native American tribes were affiliated with the Haudenosaunee. The first nations knew them too – the Iroquois.
Of course, it was the Haudenosaunee, with their six subgroups: Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, Seneca, and Tuscarora, who lived on the land from the Mohawk River to Western New York. The Haudenosaunee also had lands in what is now Pennsylvania and Canada.
The Haudenosaunee has its confederacy, and they have been a peaceful advocate for the cause and never had any wars. Their example was noted all through the Valley. They were so advanced that one sister colony possessed the peculiar genius of dragooning.
First European Contacts
- 1609: Explorer Henry Hudson navigated the river that now bears his name, laying the groundwork for Dutch claims.
- 1624: The Dutch erected Fort Orange (modern Albany), their first permanent settlement, to control the lucrative fur trade.
